Excavations in the s and s along with a study of documents have enabled a reconstruction of the history of the site. These may have been part of a manorial complex, or an expansion of the village. A chapel of ease was built around AD and was later incorporated into the castle ‘s earthworks in The castle remained unfinished and uninhabited until the first decades of the 13th century when the earthworks were heightened by up to 5m. In the 14th century Queen Isabella, the widow of Edward II, lived in a private suite to the south of the keep. Later the castle gradually fell into disrepair and parts of it were demolished in the 15th and 16th centuries. In the 19th century the first attempts at repair and ground clearance were undertaken. The castle is open to the public.

Dating back to the 13th century, Hever Castle was once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, second From to , it was the seat of the Boleyn family.

The fortifications ranged from large stone castles positioned to protect the Downs anchorage in Kent , to small blockhouses overlooking the entrance to Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire , and earthwork bulwarks along the Essex coast. Some forts operated independently, others were designed to be mutually reinforcing. These utilitarian fortifications were armed with artillery , intended to be used against enemy ships before they could land forces or attack ships lying in harbour.

The first wave of work between and was characterised by the use of circular bastions and multi-tiered defences, combined with many traditional medieval features. These designs contained serious military flaws, however, and the second period of construction until saw the introduction of angular bastions and other innovations probably inspired by contemporary thinking in mainland Europe. The castles were commanded by captains appointed by the Crown, overseeing small garrisons of professional gunners and soldiers, who would be supplemented by the local militia in an emergency.

Despite a French raid against the Isle of Wight in , the Device Forts saw almost no action before peace was declared in Some of the defences were left to deteriorate and were decommissioned only a few years after their construction. After war broke out with Spain in , Elizabeth I improved many of the remaining fortifications, including during the attack of the Spanish Armada of By the end of the century, the defences were badly out of date and for the first few decades of the 17th century many of the forts were left to decay.

Most of the fortifications saw service in the First and Second English Civil Wars during the s and were garrisoned during the Interregnum , continuing to form the backbone of England’s coastal defences against the Dutch after Charles II was restored to the throne in

The original castle was built around by the Hansard family but, following the Black Death, the title passed onto the House of Neville in Walworth was reclaimed by Robert Hansard in The castle then passed through the hands of various members of the Hansard family until , when Elizabeth Hansard married Sir Francis Ayscough. It formed part of the King’s Device programme to protect against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire and defended the strategically important Downs anchorage off the English coast. Comprising a keep with six inner and outer bastions , the moated stone castle covered 0. Although it remained armed, Deal was adapted by Sir John Norris and Lord Carrington during the 18th and 19th centuries to form a more suitable private house for the castle’s captain, which was by now an honorary position.

In , the War Office concluded that the castle no longer had any value either as a defensive site or as a barracks and it was opened to the public when the captain was not in residence. Early in the Second World War , the captain’s quarters were destroyed by German bombing , forcing Deal’s then-captain, William Birdwood , to move to Hampton Court Palace and the castle became an observation post for an artillery battery placed along the shore line.

The castle was not brought back into use as a residence and was restored by the government during the s to form a tourist attraction.

The castle, which is grade B listed by Historic Scotland, is one of historical significance occupying a dominant and defensive position on the edge of the steep ravine of the Levan Burn with extensive views overlooking the Firth of Clyde. The castle is a fortified Scots tower house configured in an unusal L-shaped plan. The castle consists of two towers joined at one corner dating from two different periods.

The western curtain wall overlies an earlier Roman wall making it likely that this area of the castle was once within the Roman town of Durobreve. The earliest reference to the castle is in the Domesday Book and the first fortification of the site in stone is accredited to Bishop Gundulf after the seige of The four-storeyed stone keep is one of the largest in England.

To the north of the keep an irregular bailey is all that can be seen of the construction. At the east end a section of wall with drum towers, the work of Henry III, survives. In Henry I gave the custody of the castle to the Archbishop of Canterbury and his successors and shortly afterwards construction of the stone keep began in the southern part of the bailey. The castle was strengthened during the reign of Richard I and during the seige of the curtain wall and south east corner of the keep were undermined by King Johns engineers.

It was repaired between In the castle was the subject of another seige. Outer defences were breached but the keep held strong.

The first fortification of this site was built by the orders of William I in It was of stone, and the buildings covered 2 acres, the whole area of the castle being 4 acres. A sketch plan of the castle made in when the site was finally cleared shows that it was nearly circular in form and probably belonged to the motte and bailey type.

In it was badly damaged by a sea flood and was rebuilt only to be dismantled before the close of Henry III’s reign. Through building operations in the C15, C17 and C19 all trace of the earthworks of the original castle have gone. It is said to have had a moat 40ft wide towards the town, and this is clearly shown on the plan round the northern side of the Inclosure fronting the market place.
